A power of attorney used in Abu Dhabi is notarised by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, and ADJD sets out its notarisation services in a published guidance manual rather than leaving them to practice. That manual is unusually specific: it lists twelve separate notarised powers of attorney, each with a service code, states a maximum validity, publishes the fee as a formula rather than a flat price, and describes the appointment as a remote meeting with the notary public. Whatever you are arranging in Abu Dhabi, those published details are the ones your document has to fit.

Someone whose representative will be dealing with Abu Dhabi authorities, assets or proceedings, and who wants to know what the emirate itself publishes before the document is drafted.
Abu Dhabi publishes twelve POA types, not one
This is the first thing to understand, because it decides which document you are actually asking for. ADJD does not offer "a power of attorney" as a single service. Its guidance manual lists twelve, and only the first is general:
- General POA (ADJD-0001) - to act "in every permissible and known matter".
- Real Estates POA (ADJD-0002) - "managing or disposing of real estates". Additionally requires a "Property title deed, a recent land layout, a valid investigation certificate, or a lease contract".
- Commercial Licenses POA (ADJD-0003) - "all legal and permissible matters in respect of the trade license(s)".
- Shares POA (ADJD-0004) - matters "related to shares"; requires a shares certificate.
- Vehicles POA (ADJD-0005) - matters "related to any or all vehicles or their plate numbers".
- Businesses POA (ADJD-0007) - "following-up his different businesses".
- Litigation POA (ADJD-0008) - "proceeding with any or all cases before courts"; requires a "Copy of the lawyer license card issued by Abu Dhabi Judicial Department".
- Inheritance POA (ADJD-0009) - "completing the of notice of succession procedures"; requires a "Death certificate or an official proof of death".
- Horses POA (ADJD-0006), Personal Status POA (ADJD-0010), Marriage POA (ADJD-0011) and Divorce POA (ADJD-0012) - each confined to its own subject.

How long it lasts, and what ADJD charges
Both are published, which is rare enough to be worth relying on. ADJD states that "the maximum period for the POA validity is 3 calendar years after the date of notarisation". The one exception it names is the litigation POA, where validity runs to "5 years for lawyers".
The fee is a formula rather than a price: "AED 100 for each year of the POA validity", with a further "AED 500 if the signature authorisation is to be added". So a three-year general power of attorney is published at AED 300 of ADJD fees, and adding signature authorisation takes it to AED 800. Those are the department's fees, paid to the department, and entirely separate from our professional fee.
These figures come from a manual published in July 2023. Treat them as what Abu Dhabi published then rather than as a guaranteed price today, and check the department's current service page before you budget.

The appointment is a remote meeting
ADJD describes the same procedure for every power of attorney it lists: "schedule an appointment to remotely meet the notary public", then "obtain the document digitally attested, after the end of the meeting". The channel is the ADJD website and the stated completion time is two working days.
The standing document requirements are short - an "Emirates ID card" and "the document to be attested" - with the per-type extras listed above. Where a party cannot attend or lacks capacity, the manual states that "the application must be submitted by a person acting on their behalf legally or lawfully, with a proof evidencing so".

Language, and documents signed abroad
ADJD attaches a condition to any document that is not in Arabic: it "should be translated by a certified translator whose valid license card will be attached to it". That is why we prepare every document in Arabic and English rather than English alone, at no extra charge.
For a document you sign outside the country, the manual is equally direct: "any document issued outside the country must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs". Abu Dhabi is not the whole UAE
Everything on this page is Abu Dhabi's. The three-year cap, the per-year fee and the twelve service codes are published by ADJD for its own notarisation service, and none of them is a federal rule.
If your transaction is in Dubai, the relevant authorities are different - Dubai Land Department for property, RTA for vehicles, and the Dubai notary for the notarisation itself - and we have not been able to read the Dubai notary's published fees or procedure, so we do not restate Abu Dhabi's in their place. Can this POA be signed from outside the UAE?
A document signed outside the UAE is attested through the UAE mission in the country where you sign. MOFA publishes the service as “Attestation through UAE Missions Abroad” and, for its courier route, requires the original in Arabic or English “or accompanied by a legally certified translation”. Requirements differ by country, so check the UAE mission in yours. MOFA does not publish the fees on that page.
How long is the POA valid?
There is no single UAE-wide answer, and we would rather say so than invent one. Abu Dhabi publishes a cap: ADJD states that "the maximum period for the POA validity is 3 calendar years after the date of notarisation", extended to five years for lawyers on a litigation POA. We have found no equivalent published figure for Dubai. Where a fixed end date matters to you, the reliable approach is to write one into the document rather than rely on a rule that may not apply in your emirate — we set the expiry date out clearly either way.
